The Silence of the Monolith: The Legacy of the Relicta

I sit in the pale, bluish twilight of Chryon, feeling the murderous cold of the gas giant pressing against the hull of my chosen vessel. It is a comforting pain. It reminds me that I am still here, entangled with this primitive body, while my home in a distant future may have already crumbled to dust.
This humanoid body I found on the shores of time... it is so loud. It pulses, it breathes, it craves warmth. I suppress these impulses with the coldness of my logic. My consciousness is a monolith in a storm of biological noise.

TheTraveler. A name I gave myself because the vocal cords of this body would otherwise tear. I withdraw from the acoustic world to preserve the inviolability of the space-time continuum.

I look at the data streams of Rukh and see the three ruling species fighting for supremacy. Terrans, Xerjs, and Toss—all of them rooting like grave robbers in the dust of history. They hunt the Relicta, that lost civilization whose artifacts and relics drift through space like forgotten bones. They lust for the power of these relics without understanding the warnings engraved in their metal.
I know the moment the last signal of the Relicta fell silent, and I watch with horror as these immature intelligences now attempt to summon the ghosts of the past for their petty wars. The temptation to intervene and warn them of the Relicta's legacy is a treacherous poison. I want to tell them that some doors are better left closed. But the protocols bind me.

Every intervention is a crack in the foundation of what is yet to come. If I correct the course of events, I risk destroying the future before it is even born. A snatched relic here could mean the end of billions of souls in my time. I would plunge the causality of millennia into chaos.

Am I their savior, protecting them from the extinction of their own existence through my cruel silence? Or am I their executioner, watching with moist eyes as they run open-eyed into the ruins of the Relicta? My humanoid body trembles at this thought—an uncontrollable tremor of pity and powerlessness. Is it the fear of the paradox, or the merciful cold of Chryon trying to freeze the burning heart within me?

Sometimes, when the blue light of the planet hits the ice crystals, I hope for a signal. An echo of another entangled soul, likewise trapped in a foreign body, struggling against the weight of this sorrowful responsibility. Perhaps there is another Relicta out there who has not remained silent. Time will give me an answer. Until then, I observe. I preserve. I remain silent.
